New Members, READ ME!

We previously had it set so that you could not post a link without having 5 posts. This was to prevent spammers.

New members, you have all become spammers, resurrecting threads two years old and adding one word replies to bolster your post count so you could advertise your supposedly "mature" guild. This defeats your advertisement. I have no problem with resurrecting very old threads if you add meaningful discussion to them.

What I have done today is raised the post count to 50 to post a link, and if there are anymore one-word replies by new members, I will treat that as spamming and ban anyone involved. Either you join our culture and add meaningful discussion to our topics, or you get bant for spamming.

Questions? Comments? Threats?

Admin Activation

Until I can figure out a good spam deterrant other than the CAPTCHA image, I've turned on admin activation. That means if you're activating a new account, I must do it manually (or at least, one of the admins once I get them on the mailing list). This should help the amount of spam profiles.

Update (December 19): I've enabled activation again, but I've added some extra protections to try to catch spammers. We'll see how it works.

Change is here.

You may have noticed the boards were locked, then if you checked back later, they were unlocked. That means you've moved to the new server. Congrats!

Please let me know if you see any immediate problems. Right now, I know that there is no multimedia, and ads are not showing in the forums. I'm not planning on adding back the ads in the forums for the time being, and multimedia was woefully out of date anyway. As I move forward with the new site, I'll be thinking about how I want those things handled.

Change is coming...

I'm finally to the point where I can move this site to the new server. This will happen this Thanksgiving weekend. No posts should be lost, though I probably will lock the forums for about an hour or so to make sure.

What will change? well, some of the features will go away, at least temporarily. This includes the gallery (way out of date anyway) and some of the phpbb modifications we've made that will not be in the new install. Some of these will come back, but it may take me a while. The main functionality of the front page and the forums will not change though.

I've already tested this migration rather successfully, so when I do it for reals, it should go smoothly.

Once this goes, EQII.com will be moving in much the same fashion, by the way. Then work will start on the new site Smile.

Thanks for your patience.

Site News

In preparation to moving to a cheaper server (since our demands are so much lower than they used to be), I will be cleaning up some things in the forums. Mainly, I will be removing users who have not activated, and users with 0 posts who have not logged in in the last month.

Time is tight right now with my job, but I hope to have this server move completed in the next month or so - downtime when the move actually happens will be minimal.

Leak - Uncomfirmed Bard Info

Apparently a leak was posted on VanBard.com and removed by its moderators. I don't have the exact details though. Before it was deleted a few people got out with it including FloridaGamer at fohguild.org. Some rather complex song composition details are available, but whether this is fiction, fact, or facing imminent change I can't know. We'll give this information the benefit of the doubt given that it was so hastily deleted from VanBard.

Absence of Enthusiasm

Online Welten has an interview with Tagad, a.k.a. Bill Fisher, a senior game designer for Vanguard: Saga of Heroes. I have mixed feelings for Online Welten, happy that they got their turn in the merry go round, but sad that the result is so damn lame. It is so weak I will not link to it for fear that it might further corrupt the troglodytes that are my readers. The content is centered on dungeons, so I suppose the trogs wouldn't be much affected, yet general mechanics such as leashes and loot rights are all the detail we get. That is then followed up by a lack of meat on tutorial-in-play newbie dungeons. There is no need to read it because less than nothing has been expressed in its contents other than a dismissal, half-assed even, of those fans who remain interested.

I don't know where the blame should lie. Did their questions suck? More or less. Of the questions that could have revealed information, were they shafted? More or less. Generally half-assed all around. I am dumbfounded by the lack of enthusiasm for this game on both sides. Perhaps there really isn't anything there and this is one more tired sign of the poor launch to come.

I remain hopeful. I reassure myself now and then that I am simply bored, and am reading too much into this. Perhaps without a current source of stimulus I ask too much of a company that is going through hefty changes. More on this later™.

Interview Round-Up

The Paladins of Telon have received some information on, well..let's all make our own guesses as to what they're interested in, from Darrin Mcpherson.

Warcry interviews the artist Jack Turner, about art. Man this analysis and summary is difficult. /sweat

Mondes Persistante has asked some questions on localization and the background of those involved in it. Localization refers to translating the game into barbarian languages, and I take it this site is french in origin. Yes, I know I'm a genius. I get that a lot.

Vanguard: Saga of Heroes Spheres has an interview with Technical GM, Paul Luna a.k.a. Vladmiir. This generally focuses on the responsibilities and privileges of being a GM.

July Newsletter

As part of my ongoing impression of a journalist I bring you Vanguard: Saga of Heroes's July Newsletter. Featuring monks and virtually nothing else, this newsletter is about those men and women who like to fight in pajamas and grapple their opponents.

Hurray Monks!

In other news, Beta 3 should begin soon. Many more invites will be sent out. Of course I'll still be excluded because THE MAN is keeping me down. More on this later™.

E3 review at IGN

http://pc.ign.com/articles/708/708176p1.html

"I've been saying for a while that a true threat to World of Warcraft must be more than really good. It must do something that WoW simply does not, and with authority. Vanguard: Saga of Heroes looks like a good place to start. Look for it this winter."

Before Keith passed away, but when it was obvious he wasn't going to be able to paint the cover, he let us know that he wanted Donato http://www.donatoart.com/ to do the art for the box.

What Donato did was and is amazing. He painted a large piece, of which the left section is used for the front of the box (just like Keith did with EQ). But what he did was paint the left side more in Keith's style, in homage to Keith, and then the painting blends nicely to his style as you move to the right.

Normally an artist won't do this -- if you ask them to paint in another person's style, they're not to interested. But this was a special case, something in homage to Keith, and Donato pulled it of even better than my wildest dreams.

Also, if you look at the front cover and see a character you don't recognize there... that's Keith, immortalized on the front of Vanguard: Saga of Heroes's box.
e3 Vanguard: Saga of Heroes teaser
